York Region Stingrays 2003
Welcome to the start of the Stingrays 2003 season. After a long summer and beach season we are back to the indoor courts. The Stingrays Team this year will be a top contender for the Ontario Championships as well as the Nationals which will be held in Saskatoon. In the teams first tournament of the season they finished a respectable 3rd capturing the bronze medal over Durham Attack. The team lost a close 3 set semi-final match to the Ottawa Mavericks and will look forward to a re-match on Ottawa's home turf as the OVA Juvenile's participate in the second tournament of the year on January 11th, 2003.
January 11th, 2003
The second tournament of the year marked the return of the Stingrays to the gold medal match. They managed the Ottawa Mavericks and Ottawa Roos in the quarter and semi final matches. They met Durham Attack in the final which was a re-match from pool play earlier in the day. Durham had the upper hand in pool play taking the two games which were very close. It was a different story in the final with the Stingrays building momentum from the their previous matches of the day. The Stingrays were well prepared and ready for a tough match with Durham. In the end the Stingrays took Durham Attack in two straight games playing with minimal errors, and capitalizing on any chance that was given to them. Congratulations to the entire team ! Thanks to Franco Girardo and Wally Dyba for preparing the team for this tournament !
January 25th, 2003 - Juvenile Boys Challenge Cup
The York Region Stingrays were back in action on Saturday January 25th for the first tier 1 tournament of the season. This brought together the top 8 teams from eastern and western Ontario. The team was in a tough pool with the Scarborough Falcons, Waterloo Tigers and the Niagara Rapids. The team earned a split with the Falcons in the morning and then played Waterloo which ended in another split match. This set up an important match with the Niagara Rapids to determine first place in their pool. After falling behind early in the match, the Stingrays battled back, one point at a time to take the two games and capture 1st place in their pool.
The playoffs were set with the Stingrays facing the Ganaraska Wolves in there quarter final match. Once again the Stingrays started off slowly, but managed to gain momentum throughout the match and beat Ganaraska in two straight games to advance to the semi-finals. There next opponent would be the Scarborough Falcons who they split with earlier in the day. Once again the Stingrays started off slowly and fell behind early. They needed to play some catch up in order to capture the first game. The second game started off much like the first and made for some tense moments for the Stingrays fans. Never giving up hope even when trailing, the team kept finding a way to put away points which ended up in a narrow victory in the second game. This set-up the showdown the team had been waiting for in the gold medal game with Bronte Beach.
The gold medal game set the 1st place seeded Bronte Beach against the second seeded York Region Stingrays. There is a great rivalry between these teams dating back to the Midget ranks, the year the Stingrays captured the provincial championship. The Stingrays did not disappoint there fans coming out and throughly dominating the Bronte Beach club in every aspect of the game taking the first game 25-13. The second game was a different story with Bronte Beach regaining there composure and beating the Stingrays by the same score as the first match. This set-up an exciting third game with the Stingrays taking an early lead in the game. Unfortunately they could not hold off the Bronte Beach club which came back to win the third game and the gold medal. If this match was any indication it will set the stage for many more games this year between the two clubs. Congratualations to the Stingrays on there 2nd place finish !
